Fire on the Mountain 1988 by Terry Bisson

 This is a science fiction novel based on the following premise: John Brown succeeds in starting a slave revolt. It's an interesting premise and he takes it in a suprising direction.  It's definitely worth the read.

Barabbas by Pär Lagerkvist (1950)

 This is a fictional account of Barabbas, the gospel figure who was chosen by the crowd to be released instead of Jesus. He is Jesus' foil in every way.  It's translated from Swedish and came out very interesting.  This is a great read.

Break it Up by Richard Kreitner (2020)

 Interesting take on US history from colonial days to the present. The thesis is secession has always been with us on all sides.  The Constitution tried to paper over the differences but was not and still is not really up to the task. 

Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan (2004)

 This is a great novel about a working class Irish gang of bank robbers in Charles Town, Massachusetts. This is about a lot of things- a heist story, gentrification, a love story etc.  Read it!

Breath, the New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor (2020)

Journalist James Nestor writes a great book about all aspects of breathing, from the science of it to yoga.  This is great.

The Brothers K by David James Duncan (1992)

 This is a novel that focuses on a family in Washington State from the 1950's to 1980.  The father, Papa Toe, was a minor league baseball player and coach.  The book is about baseball but also about so much more.  This is one of the best novels I've read.  It should be read slowly and savored.

The Sea of Galilee Boat by Shelley Wachsmann (1995)

 Book by an Israeli archaelogist who excavates a 2000 year old boat in the Sea of Galilee. It's a great story that tells us something about the Holy Land back in the day and these days about how to preserve ancient stuff.  And he's a good writer.  Read it!
